A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote Synopsis

HBO Max

Charm City Kings

After a brief introduction from creator Aaron Sorkin and members of the original cast, this hourlong special, taped at Los Angeles’ Orpheam Theatre to benefit When We All Vote, reprises a memorable episode from The West Wing’s third season. From a deconstructed stage set, Rob Lowe, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford, and Martin Sheen slip back into their unforgettable roles – and take live stage directions from fellow cast member Emily Procter. The story of “Hartsfield’s Landing” centers on the state primary in a remote New Hampshire town, whose 42 votes are counted immediately and always predict the election’s winner. As Josh obsesses over the outcome and enlists Donna to try to swing one family’s votes, President Bartlet challenges Sam and Toby to intricate chess matches that mirror the game of brinksmanship he’s playing with the Chinese, who are conducting war games in the Taiwan Strait. Meanwhile, C.J. tries to upset Charlie by hiding his copy of the president's top-secret daily schedule, prompting a spate of playful pranks.

Between acts, notable West Wing alums Elisabeth Moss and Marlee Matlin – along with other special guests – join the cast to encourage young people to cast their ballots, dispel common voting misconceptions, galvanize volunteer poll workers, and drive home the message that we’re stronger, fairer, and better when we all vote.
