After receiving a distressing phone call from local farmer Jeremy Bamber, Chelmsford Police arrive at his family’s remote farmhouse to find a gruesome scene: Jeremy’s parents, sister Sheila, and twin nephews have been brutally murdered. While tragedy, grief, and confusion consume the surviving family members – cousin Ann and Sheila’s ex-husband Colin – Detective Chief Inspector Thomas “Taff” Jones concludes it an open-and-shut case. After assessing the crime scene, Detective Sergeant Stan Jones’ suspects that there’s more to the case than meets the eye and launches an investigation of his own.

As Taff holds a press conference to declare the tragedy at White House Farm a murder-suicide, Stan holds a meeting of his own, bringing his number two Mick and the coroner on a tour of the crime scene. When Ann and her brother David are rebuffed for entrusting their growing suspicions with Taff, Stan snaps up the opportunity for an off- record chat. Later, a shocking new lead forces Taff and Stan to team up.

Despite a new piece of evidence that could break the case wide open, Stan and Mick race against time before the Bamber case is marked closed. Later, when a friend from out of town visits, Jeremy’s erratic behavior draws concerns from his girlfriend, friends, and family, who grow increasingly wary of his ability to handle the estate.

Emotions run high as the funeral approaches and attention surrounding Jeremy further drives a wedge between the family. Stan’s final, desperate attempt to keep the Bamber case open threatens to end his career... until a surprise witness arrives at the station.

As Stan shores up the remaining holes in his investigation, Taff continues to stand by his original case ruling, even as his support diminishes. Just as the police are ready to officially pursue their new case, Jeremy throws a wrench in their plans.

After the remaining evidence is gathered and scrutinized, a dramatic trial grips the nation. Following searing testimony before the jury and a packed gallery, Stan and members of the Bamber family hold their breath as they await the final verdict.
